Generations College Joins CAPTUR, Expanding Career Pathways for Court Reporting Students
CHICAGO, [September 3, 2026] — Generations College, the oldest court reporting program in the United States, announced today that it has moved its professional program approval to CAPTUR, the Council for the Advancement of Professionals, Technology, and Unbiased Reporting
CAPTUR was formed this year through the merger of the American Association of Electronic Reporters [AAERT] and Transcribers and the Society for the Technological Advancement of Reporting [STAR]. It approves educational programs across all modes of capturing the legal record, including stenographic and digital reporting.
That scope was central to the College’s decision. Generations offers stenographic training through 225 words per minute alongside coursework in digital reporting and generative artificial intelligence, a combination that reflects how the profession increasingly works. “We want our students to have more paths into this profession, not fewer,” said Dr. Grace Alexis, Chancellor of Generations College. “Court reporting takes as long as it takes, and our students are adult learners, working parents, people carrying full lives while they build speed. CAPTUR approves the way we actually teach. That made the choice straightforward.”
The College’s students may now earn a digital reporting credential before completing their degree, allowing them to begin working and earning as reporters while continuing to build stenographic speed. “Our students can be in the room, on the record, and getting paid while they finish,” said Karen Sole, Court Reporting Program Director. “Those are also the repetitions that make them faster. It changes what this program can do for someone.”
Generations College has ended its program approval with the National Court Reporters Association, effective August 31, 2026. The change does not affect the College’s accreditation, which is held through the Higher Learning Commission, nor students’ degrees, credits, financial aid, or eligibility to sit for state licensing examinations and national certification.
Generations College has trained court reporters since 1912 and continues to enroll students in its Associate of Applied Science in Court Reporting.
