WHAT ARE YOUR AMBITIONS?
I want to graduate top of my court reporting class, before working for an agency to get experience in the field. I then aim to go freelance and continue to get professional certifications because I want to keep learning and improving. One day I would like to give back with my job through CART and captioning.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE GENERATIONS COLLEGE?
I chose Generations because it is based in Illinois, and it is one of the top certified court reporting schools in the country. It is also the oldest court reporting school in the nation. The faculty and staff are really nice and personable, and I really like that about this place.
HOW IS GENERATIONS HELPING YOU TO REACH YOUR GOALS?
The administration and faculty are really dedicated to helping the students achieve their goals. They are willing to put in extra time for you. My classmates are really supportive as well. I love it here.
HOW MANY HOURS DO YOU DEDICATE TO PRACTICE?
I dedicate 2–3 hours outside of class to practice. If I begin to get sloppy because I’m tired, taking a break really helps. It’s not necessarily the amount of practice time that makes a difference, but the quality of your practice time that counts.
WHEN DO YOU FIND TIME TO PRACTICE OUTSIDE OF CLASS?
I practice at a certain time every day so I don’t get burnt out. I’m someone who is really motivated by nature, and I look forward to practicing on my machine when I get home. Of course, sometimes it is difficult to keep going but I find rewarding yourself for practicing helps.
WHY DO YOU WANT TO BE A COURT REPORTER?
I heard about it from my friend’s mom, and it just sounded super awesome. I looked into it and thought it was the coolest thing ever. I had never heard of it before, and I wanted to pursue a career which would allow me to do something different every day. That’s why I chose it.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE THINKING OF STUDYING
COURT REPORTING?
For sure, do it. Be prepared to work really hard, but the hard work definitely pays off. So, just keep pushing yourself and you will see results.
