TIPS FOR BALANCING FULL-TIME WORK AND SCHOOL
The following tips can help anyone who is juggling college and other commitments.
1. Study a subject that excites you. When you choose a college major that you are truly interested in, it can make your studies feel less arduous. Look for a course of study that piques your interest so you are more likely to stick with it if the going gets tough.
2. Explore options for workplace flexibility.
While not an option with every employer, you may want to explore whether your workplace is willing to offer any flexibility as you pursue your degree. Talk to your manager or supervisor about the possibility of working remotely regularly or occasionally, taking advantage of flextime options, or about other possible concessions that recognize your increased workload while you’re pursuing your degree.
3. Plan and prioritize your time.
Organizing your time — and sticking to your plan — are critical when you are both working and attending college. It’s also important not to procrastinate until the last minute when you have an upcoming work or school assignment. Consider using a planner or other system where you can record important assignments for work and school, document projects and schedule key meetings/classes.
4. Talk to your loved ones about your schedule.
When your spouse/significant other, roommates and friends understand that you are juggling multiple priorities, they will likely be willing to help you stick to your plan. Letting loved ones know your schedule also helps keep you accountable for your time.
5. Manage your stress levels.
When you are managing both work and school responsibilities, you have a lot on your plate. Take care of yourself and do your best to manage stress by getting enough rest, exercising and eating a balanced diet.
6. Consider online classes.
One option you may want to consider is earning your degree either partially or wholly online. Many colleges offer online degree programs designed specifically for working adults. Online classes give you the flexibility to take classes where — and when — it’s convenient for you.
STAYING MOTIVATED CAN IMPROVE WORK AND SCHOOL/LIFE BALANCE
It is natural for your energy and enthusiasm to wane when your time is stretched thin between work, school and family obligations. Finding ways to stay motivated can help you weather those periods and maintain a commitment to earning your degree.
Ultimately, successful working students are those who keep their end goals in mind. It also can help to break up your college career into smaller “wins,” celebrating mid-term successes and the completion of each course on the way to earning your degree.
