CART PROVIDER CAREER PATH
If you are looking for a career in a growing field where you’ll have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of people with hearing impairments, consider the CART provider career path. Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) providers work in real time, translating spoken English into written text, helping connect the hearing impaired to meetings, classes, workshops, church services and more.
WHAT BACKGROUND IS NEEDED TO WORK AS A CART PROVIDER?
CART providers are typically court reporting professionals who have earned associate degrees or certificates in court reporting through community colleges or technical schools. Many states have licensing requirements for court reporters, as well.
After completing a court reporting education program and obtaining licensure, most CART provider-specific training can be accomplished in a few weeks after being hired, during which time the new CART provider will be expected to learn to use specialized equipment and to become familiar with specific terminology.
WHAT IS IN A TYPICAL CART PROVIDER JOB DESCRIPTION?
The CART provider job description can vary somewhat, depending on what type of setting in which the provider will work and what type of information he or she will be translating into written text for hearing-impaired persons.
CART providers may accompany people who are hearing impaired to events or meetings, or may work remotely, “attending” such events through digital means. Using stenotype machines, CART providers are able to keep pace with conversation as it occurs, allowing the court reporting professional to capture text. CART providers are also responsible for ensuring accuracy of the translated text they provide.
WHY CONSIDER CART PROVIDER JOBS?
CART provider jobs can be attractive to those who want flexibility in their careers to work remotely or in-person, but also want to be able to make a difference in peoples’ lives. By providing translation services in real time, CART providers can significantly improve the lives of people who are hard of hearing, as the provider’s services allow people with hearing impairments to follow along with and participate in meetings and events as they occur.
This is a role where the income potential is also an attractive selling point. The median annual pay for a court reporter as of May 2019 was $60,130. Due to the specialized nature of the translation services they offer, CART provider salary can differ from this amount, with most providers reporting compensation between $25,000 and $73,000 per year.
