In fact, decades ago, students were able to take “correspondence” courses, learning at their own pace and mailing assignments to professors for grading.

As technological capabilities have improved over the years, online learning has become an increasingly popular option in higher education settings. Most colleges now offer options for students to complete courses online, although the degree to which schools have adopted these programs varies.

While there are several reasons for this increase in popularity, the flexibility of online learning is one of the top reasons many students choose this model.

EARN YOUR DEGREE ON YOUR TERMS

The flexibility of online education is about more than simply completing courses using a computer or tablet. When you choose an online learning environment, you may experience flexibility in some (or all) of the following forms:

  1. Complete your courses from (almost) anywhere: When you opt for an online-learning environment, you are no longer forced to choose a local college. Instead, you can choose the school that best fits your needs and goals, whether it is across town or across the country. You can complete your college coursework from the comfort of your home, or virtually anywhere that has Internet access.
  2. Revisit course materials as often as needed: Online learning also means that if you didn’t understand something in a course lecture, you can revisit it as often as you want. This can enhance your experience, helping you better understand and retain information.
  3. You choose the timing that works for you: In addition to choosing where you complete your online college coursework, you can also choose when to complete it. For some students, “typical” daytime schedules work well, but that is not the case for many online learners. When you choose online courses, you can complete your work at midnight, 6:00 a.m. or any other time that works with your schedule.
  4. Go at your own pace: Another way online courses offer flexibility is in the pacing. You can complete coursework as quickly as you are able, which may allow you to earn your degree faster than you could in a traditional campus setting. Many online students also appreciate having access to courses when they want to take them, without having to wait for the course to be offered again every other semester on campus.
  5. Continue to meet your other obligations: Online learning also offers tremendous flexibility for busy adults with other commitments. Many students who choose online college classes find they are still able to work full-time schedules, raise children and meet other obligations while making continuous progress toward earning their college degrees.

SUCCEEDING IN AN ONLINE-LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

While there is enormous flexibility in online learning, adjusting to learning outside of the traditional classroom setting can also pose challenges for students. A little bit of self-discipline can go a long way, as can taking advantage of opportunities for help.

TIME MANAGEMENT

The most successful online learners are those who can prioritize their time and commitments. Staying on top of course materials and assignments — and pacing work based on other obligations — puts students in charge of their time and schedules.

LEVERAGE RESOURCES

As an online learner, don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Whether that involves asking a fellow student or the instructor for help understanding course materials or asking for help with the technology aspects of online courses, advocating for your needs can help you make the most of an online education.

8 E-LEARNING TIPS AND TRICKS FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS https://www.generations.edu/8-e-learning-tips-and-tricks-for-college-students/ Wed, 06 Oct 2021 17:41:27 +0000 https://generations.edu/?p=8204 The pandemic promoted the necessity of e-learning, but many schools and colleges already had popular online options in place for students to study and learn remotely.

The post 8 E-LEARNING TIPS AND TRICKS FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS appeared first on Generations College.

WHAT IS E-LEARNING?

E-learning (also known as remote learning or distance learning) is the process of accessing educational courses and their instructors from someplace other than a traditional classroom. Students typically learn from their homes. Though any location with a good Internet connection makes e-learning possible and, for some students, a better option than attending traditional, in-person classes.

Individuals who benefit from e-learning include those who:

  • Prefer the convenience of learning from home rather than managing a commute to a classroom on campus
  • Want to jump-start their career opportunities
  • Wish to advance their career by learning new skills while continuing to work at their current job
  • Need to remain close to home to care for a child or an elderly parent
  • Are place-bound, perhaps due to lack of transportation or physical disability

E-learning is often available for classes at all levels, including kindergarten through high school and college. Many colleges and universities offer associate degree programs, master’s degree programs and doctorate degree programs online.

What follows are some tips for being a successful online learner.

E-LEARNING TIPS AND TRICKS

  1. Create a designated study space. A coffee shop might be a fun place to gather, but college classes require your full concentration. If there are too many distractions at home, investigate quiet rooms at your local library or shared coworking spaces. Some online students have had success studying inside their cars — if the weather is not extreme.
  2. Make sure you can connect to a dependable Wi-Fi signal. A strong, consistent Wi-Fi connection is necessary if lectures are taught online or if you need to download large documents to your laptop computer.
  3. Ask your instructors to record lectures and post them online. By posting lectures online, students can re-watch class presentations to better retain information. It also enables students to watch lectures at times that accommodate their schedules.
  4. Create a study group. Gather with a group of classmates — in-person or online — to discuss the previous class session. Everyone tends to hear and see things differently, so your fellow students might have gleaned a point that you missed. Be sure to exchange your tips for online learning with your study partners.
  5. Make a schedule and stick to a routine. You will need to follow a schedule once you are in the workforce, so begin good daily career habits as early as possible.
  6. Use a project management tool to stay organized. Online project management programs aren’t just for businesses and corporations. They’re perfect for organizing daily schedules for individuals and families. Check online for one that’s right for you.
  7. Engage with the instructor and your fellow students. Your remote instructor probably takes attendance and grades on participation.
  8. Know when to turn off classes. Of all the online learning tips for college students, an important one is knowing when to take a break. When working or studying from home, it’s easy to get engrossed in an assignment or feel pressured to stay ahead of the workload. It’s fine to be involved in your classes, but don’t become so immersed that it’s to your detriment. Keep your mental health top of mind. Ask family and friends to check on you periodically.

Additional learning tips for students include being wise about your time, finances and future. For instance, four-year degrees are important but they’re not right for everyone. Many well-paying, in-demand careers are attainable with a two-year associate degree. Just be certain your college is a well-established, fully accredited school with a record of graduating exceptional students who are prepared for the workforce.

SAVE MONEY ON YOUR EDUCATION AND ENTER THE WORKFORCE SOONER

Complete your professional degree in two years instead of four years at Generations College. Two-year associate degrees are available in programs that include court reporting, paralegal studies, criminal justice and business administration.

If you prefer to study remotely, you can earn an associate degree online from our business administration program, court reporting program or criminal justice program.

Of all the tips for students learning online, the most valuable recommendation is to find a degree program that is most suited to you, your talents and your interests. The best career is one that is interesting, engaging and doesn’t feel like work.

HOW EFFECTIVE IS ONLINE LEARNING IN HIGHER EDUCATION? https://www.generations.edu/how-effective-is-online-learning-in-higher-education/ Sun, 18 Jul 2021 19:41:03 +0000 https://generations.edu/?p=8238 Even before the COVID-19 pandemic found colleges across the country closing classrooms and pivoting to online learning platforms, many schools had already embraced remote learning opportunities, recognizing their potential benefits to students, faculty and administration alike. Of course, there is no question that the pandemic led to an exponential increase in adoption of online learning technologies by colleges and universities.

WHY ONLINE LEARNING IS BECOMING INCREASINGLY COMMON

Technology offerings continue to evolve at a rapid pace. Against this backdrop, more and more schools have begun to recognize that online learning programs can expand their reach so more students can pursue their educational dreams, without sacrificing the quality of education students and accreditation agencies demand. The potential benefits of online learning in college are many and varied.

Colleges that offer accredited online degree programs give busy adults the option of completing coursework in a way that best meets a student’s needs. Often, such programs allow students to view lectures and presentations from their homes and on their time, while still offering opportunities to engage with classmates and professors.

This flexibility can make a significant difference to students who are juggling multiple other responsibilities, including jobs and family obligations. Online degrees can make college more affordable, too, as there is often not a need to live on or even commute to campus. Rather than putting their dreams of earning college degrees on hold, online degree-seeking students can work toward their goals largely on their terms.

Of course, online learning is not limited to formal education programs. Some examples of online learning platforms you can pursue without registering with a college include Udemy and Skillshare. These programs offer courses in a variety of topics and use delivery methods, with some options available via video while others are audio or text elements. However, choosing to earn a degree or take coursework through a college or university online learning platform is arguably much more effective than such “do-it-yourself” options, as enrolled students have access to instructors and additional student resources.

HOW EFFECTIVE ARE ONLINE LEARNING PLATFORMS FOR HIGHER EDUCATION?

A key question students should ask when evaluating online degree programs is, “How effective is online learning in higher education?” It depends. That’s because there are many variables to consider and evaluate when trying to determine how effective an online program is (or isn’t) when compared to an on-campus program at the college level.

First, not all online learning programs are the same in terms of quality or scope. A college that had already embraced online learning programs prior to the pandemic likely has systems and technology tools in place that have been tested and refined by the school and its faculty over years of use — as opposed to schools that were forced to implement online learning tools due to COVID-19. Course instructors for online programs may also be more comfortable with the platform’s technologies than professors who were thrust into teaching remotely during the pandemic.

Perhaps the most important factor in evaluating program effectiveness is how prepared the individual student is for remote learning. The effectiveness of any online learning platform can vary significantly from one student to another — even when all other variables are the same. That’s because taking courses online requires a different level of organization and commitment from students.

It can be challenging for some students to learn and to stay engaged in course materials outside the familiar classroom setting. Students must be prepared to stay on top of the course syllabus and complete requirements as they are assigned; it can be tempting to procrastinate when there isn’t a sense of immediate obligation.

Some people also struggle with feelings of isolation from their fellow students when they opt for online platforms. It arguably takes a more concerted effort to find ways to engage others in a meaningful way when students don’t see one another regularly face to face.

Bottom line: Online learning is simply not the best choice for everyone. That said, for students who recognize and are prepared for these potential challenges, particularly students who are organized and self-motivated, online learning can be an effective way to pursue a college education.

BENEFITS OF MOBILE LEARNING https://www.generations.edu/benefits-of-mobile-learning/ Fri, 22 May 2020 20:04:39 +0000 https://generations.edu/?p=8256 The novel coronavirus pandemic has forced many students and instructors into the world of distance education. Remote instruction and learning are definitely different from in-person methods and require some adjustment for those unaccustomed to using online or mobile learning. Yet remote learning can be incredibly versatile, using a variety of online and mobile technologies.

The post BENEFITS OF MOBILE LEARNING appeared first on Generations College.

]]>
DIFFERENTIATING BETWEEN E-LEARNING AND M-LEARNING

It is important to note that mobile learning (m-learning) is not the same as “e-learning.” E-learning refers to instruction delivered online, with students participating using their desktop or laptop computers. E-learning is generally structured to deliver in-depth information to students. E-learning is often used to impart information students may not use in practice until some point in the (potentially distant) future.

In contrast, m-learning refers to lessons or materials accessed using mobile phones or tablets. Information taught using m-learning is often concise snippets that the student is expected to use relatively quickly after the lesson is completed.

ADVANTAGES OF MOBILE TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION

The benefits of m-learning include the following:

  • Learn anywhere: With mobile-learning technologies, students no longer need to be tethered to their desks. They can learn on the go from virtually anywhere, as long as they have a compatible device and Internet connectivity.
  • Ease of use: For the most part, today’s college students are comfortable using their mobile devices for all kinds of day-to-day tasks. It seems a natural extension to use them for distance-learning.
  • Content variety: M-learning may include images, video files and audio files, helping drive engagement and participation.
  • Higher retention: By keeping students motivated during lessons, chances are higher that they will retain more information.
  • Learn across devices: Lessons designed for mobile learning can often be started on one device and completed on another, removing potential barriers and making it easier for students to complete their work.

POTENTIAL USES FOR MOBILE LEARNING

M-learning is becoming increasingly popular in the workforce, in a variety of industries and job functions. Employers recognize the benefits of providing compliance training, policy updates or continuing education on the go.

In education, m-learning is also growing in popularity. Some instructors rely on mobile learning platforms as a means for students to complete and submit homework assignments.

Instructors can also use m-learning to interact with students, using built-in discussion forums, through messaging capabilities, or by conducting mobile surveys periodically or at the end of each lesson.

IS MOBILE LEARNING RIGHT FOR YOUR CURRICULUM?

As you can see, there are many potential uses and advantages of mobile learning in education. Of course, there is never a “one-size-fits-all” solution when it comes to teaching, so it is important to explore various options and make informed decisions about distance-learning methods.

At Generations College in Chicago, we are proud to offer several fully online associate degree programs, helping working adults realize their dreams of finishing college. Contact us to learn more about our programs, about the advantages of m-learning, or for help setting up remote-learning!

ADVANTAGES OF VIDEO CONFERENCING IN EDUCATION https://www.generations.edu/advantages-of-video-conferencing-in-education/ Sat, 16 May 2020 20:48:23 +0000 https://generations.edu/?p=8264 With schools at all levels moving to online-only instruction in 2020 due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, teachers who previously only taught in person in the classroom now find themselves seeking ways to make their lectures and lessons capture and keep the attention of their students.

There are various technologies instructors can use — from simply pre-recording or livestreaming their lessons to interactive video conferencing software. There are several potential advantages of video conferencing in education, as discussed more fully below.

The post ADVANTAGES OF VIDEO CONFERENCING IN EDUCATION appeared first on Generations College.

]]>
BENEFITS OF VIDEO CONFERENCING IN EDUCATION

In addition to the convenience online learning offers, instructors and students alike can benefit in multiple ways from classroom video conferencing:

  • Content sharing: Rather than simply emailing files to students or posting them on a classroom portal online, video conferencing gives teachers and students the ability to share documents and files in real time.
  • Connect participants: Social distancing, and distance learning, can lead to feelings of isolation. Video conferencing applications facilitate interaction by bringing people together. This tool can also connect participants from all over the world, making it possible to engage local students as well as international students.
  • Recording functionality: Another benefit of video conferencing is that it allows participants to record the lecture or lesson for future reference. While this feature isn’t used much when video conferencing is used in primary grades instruction, it can be beneficial for high school and college students who are using online learning tools. This gives students another means to help with studying and exam preparation.
  • Engage others: In addition to uniting students and teachers, video conferencing may be employed to bring in guest lecturers and other subject matter experts. Whether an expert is physically located in the same town or is halfway across the globe, video conferencing can bring everyone to the same (virtual) table.
  • Interaction and collaboration: Perhaps the biggest benefit of video conferencing in education is the fact that it encourages interaction and collaboration between students and teachers. In turn, this could make students more motivated and engaged in their learning experience.

APPLICATIONS FOR VIDEO CONFERENCING IN EDUCATION

There are several possible purposes for classroom video conferencing:

  • Lectures: Teachers can give lectures remotely to the entire class while sharing reference documents on-screen.
  • Small group learning: Another popular use of video conferencing in the classroom is small group discussion sessions. Video conferencing can be a great way for students working on group assignments or projects for class to connect face to face, remotely.
  • Conferences and meetings: Video conferencing tools are also a great option for connecting students and teachers one on one for advising sessions, or as a way of holding “office hours” to answer students’ questions remotely.

HOW TO AVOID CABIN FEVER https://www.generations.edu/how-to-avoid-cabin-fever/ Tue, 05 May 2020 21:01:57 +0000 https://generations.edu/?p=8275 Shelter-in-place orders are intended to keep us safe as the COVID-19 pandemic progresses. However, there is no question that spending all of your time cooped up at home can be taxing. You may feel restless, unmotivated and anxious. You might even experience difficulty concentrating on your work or studies.

If you’re wondering how to avoid cabin fever or at least lessen its impact, keep reading. We’ve pulled together this list of tips for maintaining your well-being. Make good use of your time while keeping yourself, your loved ones, and your community as safe as possible.

The post HOW TO AVOID CABIN FEVER appeared first on Generations College.

]]>
CREATE STRUCTURE IN YOUR DAY

One of the simplest and most effective steps you can take to stave off cabin fever is to treat your days the same as you did prior to the shelter-in-place order. It can be tempting to sleep in and spend the majority of your time in pajamas but doing so may make you feel more unsettled or directionless.

Strive to wake up at the same time most days. Shower, and dress in clothes that make you feel comfortable and confident. Make your bed and keep your living space tidy. If you are taking online courses or working remotely, stick to a schedule. Try to eat at regular mealtimes and go to bed each night at a reasonable hour. These simple actions should help you feel more in control, which can do wonders for your frame of mind.

GIVE YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM A BOOST

When our routines are interrupted and we’re stuck at home for an extended period, it can be easy to fall into bad habits, such as eating too much comfort food or sneaking snacks from the kitchen. The fact that gyms and health clubs are temporarily closed compounds the problem, providing an easy excuse to slack off on our fitness regimens.

Try to buy, prepare and eat well-balanced meals, including fruits and vegetables that can help boost your immune system. In addition, go outside to walk, run or bike while practicing appropriate social distancing. You could also start an in-home workout program and stream exercise videos from your TV, computer, phone or tablet.  A healthy diet and regular physical activity will help keep stress levels in check.

MAINTAIN SAFE CONTACT WITH FRIENDS, FAMILY AND CLASSMATES

Physical isolation from our friends, classmates, and loved ones can be hard, especially when we don’t know how long it will last. Thankfully, today’s technology provides numerous ways to stay in touch with others.

You could schedule regular video chats with family or set up a virtual happy hour with friends. Of course, talking to loved ones through a screen is not the same as being together. Still, there is comfort in connecting with others to share frustrations and laughs.

As we self-isolate, there is a tendency to feel alone. It may help to remember that your friends, relatives, classmates, co-workers, neighbors and teachers are all struggling with the shelter-in-place orders too.

At Generations College, we are committed to taking the appropriate actions that protect the health and well-being of our student body, faculty and staff.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR ONLINE CLASSES https://www.generations.edu/how-to-prepare-for-online-classes/ Sun, 22 Mar 2020 21:24:47 +0000 https://generations.edu/?p=8288 For students in schools across the country, classes that started in person in January and February are being moved online for the remainder of the spring semester due to the COVID-19 pandemic. If your school is transitioning to online learning, you may be wondering how to prepare for online classes and exams.

On-campus classes generally involve some combination of attending lectures, participating in discussions, completing and turning in papers and other assignments, and taking exams. The good news is that in today’s technology-driven world, you can do all of these tasks remotely.

The post HOW TO PREPARE FOR ONLINE CLASSES appeared first on Generations College.

]]>
PREPARING FOR ONLINE CLASSES

If this is your first experience with distance learning, we’ve compiled these tips to help you effectively prepare for classes:

  • Location: Find a good place in your home where you will be able to study consistently. Ideally, this is a dedicated space away from other distractions.
  • Tools: Become familiar with the format and technology your teachers will use, and be sure to have the necessary equipment. An up-to-date computer, reliable Internet connectivity and anti-virus software can help make sure you will be able to participate.
  • Time management: A big component of successful online learning is being able to self-motivate and manage your time effectively. Create a schedule and hold yourself accountable for meeting course obligations.
  • Communicate: Interactions with classmates and instructors will be different through online learning, but don’t be afraid to participate. Most interactions will be electronic through email or online chat tools. Engage in the class discussion boards as much as possible and don’t be afraid to reach out to teachers for clarification on anything, just like in the classroom.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR AN ONLINE EXAM

Now that we’ve covered how to prepare for online classes, let’s turn to some tips on how to prepare for an online test:

  • Study: Set aside time to study. It can be easy to let your personal life and schoolwork bleed together when studying at home and attending classes remotely. Try to resist that temptation and stick to your plan.
  • Understand testing parameters: Depending on the format and software your instructors are using, you might have a set amount of time to complete an exam. Be sure you understand what the time limitations are, so you don’t inadvertently run out of time.
  • Beware of “open-book” tests: Your school/instructors may allow you to use study materials, making tests an “open-book” format. Don’t be lulled into a false sense of security thinking you can simply look up each answer as you go. If you haven’t adequately prepared, this strategy is likely to backfire, and you will not have enough time to complete the exam.

LEVERAGE SUPPORT OPTIONS AVAILABLE THROUGH YOUR SCHOOL

For many secondary and post-secondary schools, the current pandemic is forcing the transition to online learning. For other schools, online learning is an established option. If you are taking online courses toward your high school or college degree, learn about your school’s programs and support services. Your school wants you to succeed, so don’t be afraid to take advantage of the technology help desk, library and other student services resources.

Generations College in Chicago offers several accredited associate degree programs that are available entirely online. Distance learning offers students flexibility, allowing degree candidates to take courses on their schedules without having to commute to and from the college campus.

HOW TO STAY PRODUCTIVE WHILE STUDYING AT HOME https://www.generations.edu/how-to-stay-productive-while-studying-at-home/ Fri, 20 Mar 2020 21:29:29 +0000 https://generations.edu/?p=8292 Most of the country now finds itself subject to shelter in place or social isolation mandates as we collectively attempt to limit the spread of COVID-19. For many students, this means transitioning to online learning — at least for the time being. If you are not used to attending classes remotely and doing all of your studying at home, having to suddenly do so can be an adjustment.

The post HOW TO STAY PRODUCTIVE WHILE STUDYING AT HOME appeared first on Generations College.

]]>
TIP 1: CREATE A SCHEDULE (AND STICK TO IT)

Routine is important. That is especially true during times of uncertainty, such as the current COVID-19 pandemic. When you’re attending classes online or are studying at home, try to stick to a schedule. That does not mean you have to schedule schoolwork from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day, but plan the week to ensure you block time to complete coursework and homework without rushing to meet deadlines.

An effective study-from-home schedule also includes setting time for exercise and household chores such as laundry and cleaning. Separate those activities from your schoolwork, just as you would if you were studying outside the home.

When trying to determine how to study at home, don’t underestimate the importance of getting enough sleep every night. Try to go to bed and wake up at roughly the same times every day. This will help you be more focused on studies.

TIP 2: FIND THE BEST PLACE TO STUDY IN YOUR HOME

When you are learning or studying from home, where you study matters. Some people are fortunate enough to have a dedicated study space in their homes, where they can go to focus exclusively on their schoolwork without interruptions.

If you don’t have a home office or even a desk in the corner of your bedroom, you may find yourself studying at your kitchen table. There’s nothing wrong with that — as long as you have the room needed to focus on your work. Try not to study in bed, though, as this can make it harder to sleep when it’s time to do so.

If you study best with ambient noise, consider downloading an app to give you white noise or calming background noise. These tools may make it easier to trick your brain into thinking you’re at the park, library, coffee shop or another favorite study location.

TIP 3: MINIMIZE DISTRACTIONS

Ask anyone who regularly works from home or studies from home what their biggest challenge is, and chances are good their response will be “avoiding distractions.”

In today’s constantly connected world, it takes discipline to focus on the task at hand. Steps you can take to minimize distractions include the following:

  • Turning off phone notifications
  • Checking email just two to three times per day
  • Being intentional about not checking your social media feeds while you are supposed to be studying

It’s OK to reconnect with your network during breaks, but don’t let 10-minute study breaks stretch into hours-long social media breaks.

WEIGHING THE PROS AND CONS OF AN ONLINE EDUCATION https://www.generations.edu/weighing-the-pros-and-cons-of-an-online-education/ Thu, 09 Jan 2020 00:30:28 +0000 https://generations.edu/?p=8348 Until recent years, earning a college degree meant attending scheduled classes on a college campus, whether the class times and locations were convenient or not. Fortunately, advances in technology have revolutionized education. Today, more people than ever have personal computers and/or tablets, and Internet access is available nearly everywhere. This connectivity makes earning a valuable college degree online a viable option, one that more and more colleges — and students — are embracing.

BENEFITS OF TAKING ONLINE CLASSES
  • Flexible scheduling. When you take traditional college classes, you are at the mercy of a schedule of class times. If your class is scheduled to meet Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 to 11 a.m., that’s when you need to be there. In contrast, most online class options leave the scheduling up to individual students. So, if the time that works best for you to view your class lecture is 9 p.m. on a Sunday, you can do so — and still have access to the same information your peers viewed earlier in the day.
  • Location flexibility. Technology also has made it possible to attend classes from almost anywhere in the world. Whether you are across town or across the country from your college campus, you can complete your required coursework as long as you have an Internet connection.
  • More affordable option. Online degree programs are often more economical than traditional programs, simply because you don’t have to pay to live on or near campus, or for the costs of commuting (transit passes, gas and parking permits, etc.)
  • Accreditation. When online college classes and degree options were initially available in the early 2000s, they were not widely respected. There was a perception that an online degree was somehow a lesser option, as opposed to a “real” college degree. Thankfully, that’s changed. Today, it is possible to earn a respected, accredited degree completely online. Generations College’s online degree programs are fully accredited, so you can be confident in your ability to put your degree to work after graduation.

POTENTIAL DISADVANTAGES OF TAKING ONLINE CLASSES

  • Technology requirements. In order to earn your degree online, you must have access to computer equipment that meets the school’s and program’s minimum requirements for online learners. You also need reliable Internet access so you can view and participate in lectures and chat rooms, and submit homework as required.
  • Self-discipline and focus. Some students prefer the structure that comes from taking traditional college classes on campus, rather than the more open-ended schedule that is available to online learners. When you commit to taking online classes, you need to have the internal drive and self-discipline to make sure you are meeting and staying on top of course requirements and expectations.
  • Interaction takes more effort. Online degree programs also make it more of a challenge for students to interact with their instructors and fellow students. If you choose to pursue online college classes, make a concerted effort to take advantage of your school’s opportunities to engage with other students, faculty and staff. As technology becomes a more integral part of education, students are increasingly turning to online classes to further their studies. In fact, research has found that nearly 30% of students in America take classes online. Further, the number of colleges and universities offering online courses has doubled since 2002.

Online classes give students the flexibility to work toward their degree on their schedule, and from anywhere they have an Internet connection. They are also usually a less-expensive option than in-person classes — giving students access to a wide selection of classes and courses of study.

As education continues to change, how can students adjust their study habits to flourish in these newer classroom environments? Here are seven tips for online class success, as well as how to prepare for online college courses.

1. Stay Organized
One of the most effective ways to master online classes is to stay organized. Just like in a standard classroom environment, ensuring that all notes and classwork are protected, sorted and accessible is a great way to do well in the class. Online resources such as Evernote and Google Docs can also keep all digital work together and easily searchable.

2. Maintain a Schedule
While staying physically organized is necessary, keeping time and priorities in order matters, too. On-site classes provide more structure, but taking online classes allows for more flexibility. While that flexibility is a benefit, it also means that students have to be proactive about making sure they stay on top of their assignments. Setting daily and weekly course goals can help students use their time efficiently and effectively.

3. Work With Others
On-campus classes provide a natural way for students to find study partners who will keep them accountable. However, the same can be said for online classes. View assigned message board postings and group projects as not just tasks that have to be completed, but opportunities to connect with students.

That said, be aware of the academic integrity rules for classes or courses of study. Keep in mind that while working with other students is a great way to study for tests, depending on school rules, online students who help one another on tests — including sharing test questions or taking exams in the same place — could be subject to academic penalties. Finding accountability and support is key, but it should not override school policies or honor codes.

4. Find Your Learning Style
Online courses give students the chance to learn the same material as classes held in physical classrooms. Yet taking classes remotely also allows students the chance to find unique ways to learn and remember material.

Education has begun to focus more on individuals’ learning styles. These include whether students learn best by hearing information, receiving it visually, or having chances to perform more hands-on tasks related to the material. While making flashcards of vocabulary and course concepts may work for visual learners, recording notes and listening to lectures multiple times can help auditory learners find more success in online classes. The flexibility that comes with online courses allows students to tailor their classes to their learning styles.

5. Stay in Touch With College Staff
While students in online classes will not see their professors on a daily (or even weekly) basis, it is still wise to keep in contact with professors and teaching assistants.

Whether professors who instruct online have virtual office hours, or just a list of contact information and available appointments, these times represent valuable opportunities to ask questions about unclear assignment instructions, discuss important course concepts, or potentially find references for future opportunities. Regardless of how these times are used, staying in contact with professors and college counselors is a great way to be successful in online courses.

6. Make Sure You Have the Right Resources (and Backups)
Just like in physical classes, students in online classes will need the right supplies. This can include any assigned textbooks and readings, which may be available online as digital copies for significantly less cost than printed ones.

It may seem obvious, but a reliable Internet connection is essential. Having the most efficient schedule or the most organized notes will not help when it comes to the final exam, only to have the Internet connection crash. A backup plan for how to access the Internet — including public libraries, school facilities or, in a pinch, public places like a nearby coffee shop — is a good idea.

WHY ONLINE CLASSES?

By using these seven tips for success in online courses, students can be well on their way to reaching their degree and career goals. Taking classes remotely gives students the flexibility to pursue their degree on their timetable. Online courses and degrees help students learn, grow and study anywhere — all for a lower average cost than classes on campus.
